History of Bilovodsk

Bilovodsk – one of the ancient settlements of Slobid Ukraine – was founded in 1686 by Cossacks and runaway peasants who moved to free lands. Bilovodsk was the center of the Bilovodsk Hundred of the Ostrogoz Regiment.

In 1708, the city was destroyed due to the support of its inhabitants for the Bulavin uprising. Prince V. Dolgoruky’s squad carried out the punitive operation by royal order. In a few years, the city was revived. From 1779 to 1860, Bilovodsk had the status of a city, from 1779 to 1796 – a district city, nowadays, as an economic and cultural center, it is recognized as a historical architectural monument.

Bilovodsk suffered as a result of the genocide of the Ukrainian people committed by the USSR government in 1932-1933, the number of established victims in Bilovodsk 1st village council (in the 1930s there were 2 village councils in Bilovodsk) — 32, Bilovodsk second village council — 153 people.
